Body Fat
What Is Body Fat percentage? Simply stated, it's the percentage of your total body weight that is fat. As you know, your body is made of bones, muscles, organs, and body fat. All of these components are vitally important to your healthy body. Yes, that includes fat. We all need a certain amount of fat in our bodies to function at peak efficiency, body fat even helps to protect and nourish your organs, bones and muscles. Every day your body is constantly burning calories to function normally. Excess calories are converted into fat and then stored so they can be used at a later time. Unfortunately, your body will continue to create and store body fat whenever it's given more calories than it needs to burn immediately, even if it already has plenty of stored fat. The more excess fat your body creates the higher body fat percentage you will have. As your body fat % increases so does your risk of health problems... including high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, stroke, osteoarthritis, some cancers, and type 2 diabetes. Lowering body fat percentage is will help reduce risks of these diseases and will likely improve your quality of life.

The body fat chart above is based on guidelines by the National Institute of Health (NIH) and American College of Sports Medicine. Where does your body fat percentage place you?
