"I'm
trying to lose weight but because of my job, I eat in restaurants
almost every day. What can I do to eat healthier and stay on my
diet when I'm eating out so much?" John Smith
"You can stay on your diet and eat out every day. Just always
remember to "ask for what you want. You are the customer and
most restaurants will honor your requests. Don’t be intimidated
by the menu – ask your server how foods are prepared or to
suggest substitutions. If you wish to reduce portion size, try ordering
appetizers as your main meal. When reading the menu, choose lower-calorie,
low-fat cooking methods. Look for terms like steamed, in its own
juice, broiled, baked, roasted, poached, or stir-fried. Ask for
margarine instead of butter; skim milk, instead of whole milk; to
use less oil when cooking; to trim visible fat off poultry or meat;
to serve salad dressing on the side. Above all else, don’t
get discouraged. There are usually several healthy choices to choose
from at most restaurants." NIH 1998 Obesity Report
